The Shammah family came to New York in the 1920s from Aleppo, Syria. The family settled in Sheapshead Bay, Brooklyn, where the eldest daughter worked for a travel agency.
As the climate in the Middle East got worse, more of the Shammah’s friends and family moved to New York.
They built their own Jewish Syrian community in New York, but it was overshadowed by the hostile environment of their home country.
They wished people could see the Syria they knew, the Syria they lived in for generations.
Then Malak Cruiseline was born.
